Voters' Rights/Election Reform Committee
In elections, the only way to eliminate the corrupting influence of "special interest" money is to establish a publicly financed election system.
In California, legislation has been drafted to achieve this aim -- it is modeled on the “Clean Money” public financing system of elections that already exists in Arizona and Maine. All of us who favor authentic democratic control of government have an interest in passage of this legislation.
”Fair elections” is a crucial issue for Democratic clubs, since the dominant influence of private money in elections replaces the influence that the clubs – which are, after all, the grassroots of our Party – should have.
Under the current system, an “electable” candidate must be devoted to fund-raising and to answering to the interests that provide the funds. The result is that a wealthy few, not grassroots Democrats, end up determining the choice of candidates, their platforms, and their policies once elected.
Under the current system, public officials express the will of those who fund their campaigns, rather than the interests and values of those who voted them into office.
If voters' rights and election reform are of concern to you, please contact us and we’ll work together, as Democratic clubs, to pass the reform legislation that true democracy requires.
